No amount of engineering can compensate for the stress that can be placed on the glass if improperly installed. This stress can cause glass breakage even with only minor player contact with the rim.

Even today’s best breakaway rims allow by design minimal pressure to be placed on the glass upon initial player contact with the rim and at maximum deflection
